MBBS Admission in India

The introduction of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) has altered the entire MBBS admission process compared to the previous years. With the right approach, candidates can handle this strenuous procedure and gain admissions.

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) is an eminent undergraduate degree in medicine. This professional course is an aspiration for many students across the globe. 

Being one of the most challenging courses of education, the degree aims to offer an academic and conceptual understanding of numerous concepts of medicine, human anatomy, and surgical methods. This 53-month undergraduate program allows the students to pursue a career in the medical field as ‘Doctors’ after qualifying. This course involves 1-year mandatory internship in the respective field of study.

In India, thousands of students compete for the MBBS admissions every year; however, the MBBS seats are limited. Thus, gaining Get MBBS admission has become a hard task for both the students and parents.

About the MBBS admission process 2021

1.Entrance Exam:

As per the instructions of the Supreme Court, all the MBBS admissions for the year 2021 will be purely made based on the national level entrance exam (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) scores. There is no possibility of direct mbbs admissions without clearing this entrance. AIIMS and JIPMER admission is also done through NEET scores.

The PG admissions for medicine are offered through NEET-PG.

2.Admission Statistics:

In India, there are around 532 medical colleges comprising of 76,928 MBBS seats, plus 1205 seats in 15 campuses of AIIMS and 200 seats from JIPMER, New Delhi. This totals to an overall of 78,333 MBBS seats across the country.

In 2019, approximately 15 Lakh students appeared for the National entrance examination among which 14, 10,754 students qualified and acquired eligibility for the counseling process.

In 2018, around 13 Lakh students appeared for NEET. We can clearly see that the numbers are increasing every year.

3.Eligibility criteria for NEET 2021

  • Candidate must be an Indian citizen. (OCI candidates can also apply)
  • The candidate must be 17 years minimum as on 31st December of the year of MBBS Admission.
  • The maximum age limit for reserved categories: 25 – 30 years.
  • Candidates must pass 12th class with a minimum of 50 % marks. The students must have studied Biology, Physics, and Chemistry as main subjects in Class 12 with English.
  • Candidates who studying in the 12th class can also apply.

4.Admission Procedure: 

The authority that conducts the MBBS admissions through NEET-UG is the Medical Counseling Committee, also known as MCC. 

15% of All India Quota (AIQ) is filled through the admission process conducted by MCC. Candidates competing for this quota are eligible to acquire admission in medical colleges across the country. The remaining 85% of seats are filled by the state government admission process.

The counseling process starts after the NEET-UG results being released. The counseling for AIQ quota begins first followed by the state quota. Only the candidates listed in the merit list released by the MCC are declared eligible to participate in the counseling process conducted under the AIQ quota.

5.Registration: 

Registration is the first step in counseling. The candidates need to complete the registration process on the official MCC website to compete for 15% of AIQ MBBS Admission seats.

After completing the registration, the candidates have to proceed with payment of fee. The fee payment is to be made online through credit card/ debit card/ net banking.

8.Eligibility criteria for MBBS admission

  • Must pass12th or equivalent qualification with science subjects – Physics, Chemistry and Biology with English.
  • Must have an aggregate score of 50% in the 12th qualification exam.
  • Age to be between 17-25 years at the time of the admission process.
  • Should have cleared NEET 2021 with the qualifying score.

9.Seat Allotment: 

The seat allotment during the counseling process will be entirely based on the NEET scores and merit list. Candidates can lock their choice from the available seats. The candidates will have to submit their preferences during the time of admission. There is no limitation on the choices made by the candidates from the available seats. However, no changes would be entertained after seat allotment. Candidates can download their respective allotment orders from the official website. After the counseling and locking the seats the candidates are expected to report to their respective college with the allotment order and all other mandatory documents. The admission would be confirmed only after the submission and verification of all the documents in the selected college.
