The competition for getting admission in Indian medical among the International students is increasing due to the standardized education system and the course recognition by the countries across the globe. MCI is offering special quotas for the international and the NRI students. The Non Resident Indian (NRI) students can apply for the MBBS admission under this quota where 15% pf seats are reserved for them.
MBBS admission for NRI students in India
The NRI students who are interested in pursuing their medical education in the top medical colleges of India can apply for the MBBS counseling conducted by the MCI. The NRI students should appear for the NEET exam and clear the exam with required cut-off to get qualified for the NEET UG counseling. Clearing the NEET exam requires a lot of training as this is the nationwide entrance exam for all medical aspirants to get admission in the Indian medical college. The NRI students can opt for online training to crack the NEET UG exam.
The NRI students can compete only for the 15% of seats reserved under the NRI quota in All India counseling and State counseling. The admission process will be similar to that of the Indian students and the students can apply for the counseling online.
Who are all called NRI students?
You can apply for the 15% NRI quota seats, only if you are coming under any one of the following categories. The categories are as follows,
- Indian citizens and their children who are living or settled in the foreign countries are considered as NRI.
- The children of the individual’s who are employed under the state or central government and serving their deputation period in the overseas ground can apply for the NRI quota seats.
- Candidates who are of Indian origin but living abroad are considered as the NRI candidates.
- Individuals born in international grounds to the Indian students are also considered as NRI students.
- Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) and POI are also included in the NRI candidates list.

What are the eligibility criteria for NRI students in MBBS admissions 2022?
For getting MBBS admissions in the Indian medical universities, the NRI students must have the following eligibility criteria,
- The candidate must possess the supporting documents to prove they are NRI candidates.
- The students must have a valid passport.
- The student should have cleared the NEET exam with qualifying scores.
- The aspirant should have completed school education in the 10+2 format or an equivalent education system.
- The candidates must have completed their school education with Biology as one of their major subjects and other subjects like physics, chemistry, math must be included in their syllabus.
- Candidates must have a real blood relation with the financial supporter, like father, mother, sister, brother, aunt, uncle, etc.
- The candidates must be of the required age limit i.e 17 years and above.

NRI MBBS admission process
The NRI MBBS admission process is very similar to that of the Indian students’ admission process. The NRI students will be allocated MBBS seats under the 15% of seats reserved under the NRI quota. This 15% seats will be shared among the international students who are willing to apply for the medical admissions in the Indian universities.
The NRI MBBS process follows the following steps,
- The candidates have to apply for the NEET UG exam and clear the exam with qualifying scores.
- Then the candidates have to apply for the NEET UG counseling with your NEET scores.
- Based on your cut-off, you will be called for the online counseling process and the seat will be allocated according to the NRI quota.
- After the seat allocation the candidate can approach the college for paying the tuition fee and confirming the admission.
NRI Quota MBBS seats allocated and fees structure
The NRI quota seats available in the Indian medical colleges differ between 6000-7000 seats. The number of seats available in each college differ based on their seat availability. The NRI students can apply for both Government and the private medical colleges. These students are also eligible to apply for the management quota seats. The Government College fees structure for the NRI students also differ between INR 14 Lakhs to INR 20 Lakhs and Private College fees structure for the NRI students also differ between 20 Lakhs to 35 Lakhs based on the type of college they have chosen to study.
Important guidelines for the NRI candidates
The NRI students should follow certain guidelines to get admission in the NRI quota seats. These 15% seats in the AI counseling and state counseling will be shared along with the oreign nationalities competing for the medical admissions.
- Though the candidates have completed their school education abroad, the students have to appear for the NEET exam and clear the exam with qualifying scores. They are eligible to apply for the counseling process only if they have appeared for the NEET examination.
- at least one of the parents must be residing abroad as a NRI and should be residing outside India for a minimum of 5 years.
- The student’s sponsor must have a first degree blood relation with their financial sponsor.
- Incase the candidates is not having a parent or a first degree blood relation, the following relations will be considered,
- Uncle and aunt (Brother or siser of the father)
- Maternal uncle or Maternal aunt (Brother or sister of the mother)
- Grandparents (parents of the father or mother)
- First degree paternal and maternal cousins
- A proof of being the NRI sponsor of the candidate from the Indian embassy or residence proof from the residing country’s ministry is required.
- To showcase the proof of their financial status, the bank passbook is required.
- The valid ID cards of the financial sponsor like their passport, visa, work permit, etc are required as a proof.
NRI Quota admissions in the Government medical colleges
The NRI students have the opportunity to get admission in the government medical colleges also. However the tuition fee for the NRI students will be varying from those of the Indian students. In Government colleges also nearly 15% of seats are reserved for the NRI students. As the NRI students are participating in the AI counseling their chance for getting admission in the government medical colleges are high. The NRI students have the opportunity to get admission in the government medical colleges also. However, the NRI seats in Government colleges are available only in 5 states of the country, namely Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Puducherry, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana. The tuition fee for the NRI students will be varying from those of the Indian students. The fees for the NRI students will be between INR 14 Lakhs to INR 20 Lakhs per annum. In Government colleges also nearly 15% of seats are reserved for the NRI students.
