What is MBBS all about?

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, abbreviated and commonly known as MBBS is an undergraduate degree course for medical aspirants to become certified, professional allopathic medical practitioners. The course duration of MBBS is five years and six months that includes one year of rotatory internship in a hospital or certified other health centres. Upon completion of the MBBS degree, one can wish to pursue a postgraduate degree (M.D./M.S.) in any of the specializations like Anatomy, Anesthesia, Dermatology etc.,

MBBS Eligibility Criteria:

  • Class 12 Pass (10+2) with Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
  • Lower age limit – 17 years
  • Upper age limit – 25 years 
  • The Minimum Score for general/unreserved/EWS category – 50%, reserved category (OBC/SC/ST) – 40% in their class 12 (HSC) board exams.
  • Clearing the respective entrance exam (NEET, JIPMER, AIIMS etc.,) is mandatory for admission into MBBS.

Entrance Exams for MBBS:

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is the standard entrance exam for admission into all medical-related undergraduate courses in India. Previously, the All India Institute Of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER), Puducherry, had separate entrance exams for MBBS admissions. However, in 2019 the government had scrapped separate entrance exams for both the institutes that made NEET the sole entrance exam for MBBS admissions across India.

Admission Process for MBBS:

The admission process for MBBS involves the following steps.

  • When the application for NEET is released, log on to NTA’s official website. Fill up and submit the application form within the time frame.
  • Candidates can download the admit card from NTA’s official website.
  • With the admit card and all relevant documents, candidates will have to appear for the NEET exam on the exam day at the centre allotted to them.
  • NTA will release the NEET result and merit list on its website. Candidates can check the results by entering their credentials.
  • Candidates can now choose to apply for All India Quota (for medical colleges across India) and/or their State Quota (for medical colleges in their state).
  • The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) will release the All India Quota merit lists for all candidates while the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) of every state government will release the state merit list for the respective states.
  • Based on the merit list, candidates will be called for the AIQ counselling, where they will have to fill their choices for college and the course.
  • MCC will conduct the Mock seat allotment process to check if the candidate will get a seat at his/her preferred choice of college.
  • Candidates will now be asked to lock their choices. They will have to wait until the seat allotment process gets over. The choices once locked cannot be changed later.

Post completion of your MBBS degree, one several options available to move forward. The person can choose to pursue a postgraduate medical degree or having been certified as a medical practitioner, he/she can choose to work in any of the following places.

MBBS – Pay Scale After Course Completion:

  • The Salary of an MBBS doctor/medical practitioner depends on various factors like location, experience, expertise and the organization they’re working in. 
  • For beginners, salary may range between INR 3 LPA to INR 6 LPA.
  • For experienced doctors, the pay scale may range between INR 8 LPA to INR 50 LPA.
